Junior Coaching Mentorship Pilot Program

SHC is launching a Junior Coach Pilot Program to provide mentorship to players who want to get involved in coaching while giving our senior coaching staff the opportunity to help develop the future leaders of our association.

SHC believes investing in the development of leadership skills in our current SHC players at the grassroots level will provide the foundation for continued coaching excellence going forward. Junior Coaches can play a key role in inspiring young players by teaching the fundamentals of hockey and sharing their love of the sport while developing their leadership skills and a sense of community.

With the support of the SHC, Junior Coaches will be expected to complete Hockey Alberta Coach Development coursework and certifications, Respect in Sport Leader as well as other coaching requirements. With the guidance of the Senior Coaching staff of the team, Junior Coaches will develop drills, demonstrate skills and be on-ice leaders at practices.

The Junior coaches will be available to all Initiation, Novice, Atom and Peewee level teams who wish to participate in the program. Candidates will be vetted prior to contacting interested teams to discuss assignments. As this is a pilot program for the 2019-20 season, we will be looking for participant feedback from both the junior and senior coaches at the end of the season to determine the direction of the Junior Coaching program going forward.

Junior Coach Requirements:

  • Must be currently playing in PeeWee, Bantam or Midget
  • Able to attend at least 4 ice times with your coaching staff and be equipped in helmet with cage, neck guard, skates, gloves and stick
  • Responsible for helping to set up and run drills as determined by the Head Coach Mentor
  • Must be able to attend a group meeting at the start of the mentorship program
  • Upon completion of the program will send in a survey and or description of their experience

To apply:

Through an application process, both Junior and Senior Head Coaches who are interested in participating in the program must complete an application form:

Players: Junior Coach Mentorship Application Form

Head Coach: Senior Coach Mentorship Application Form

*Please note, we can only accept as many junior coaches as we have teams for.

We look forward to receiving your applications and launching this exciting new pilot program with you!

Thank you,
