2020-21 Season Credit/Refunds

Mar. 02, 2021

On behalf of the SHC Executive, we would like to thank our members for their patience and support throughout the past year as we navigated the many challenges and uncertainties we faced due to COVID-19.  Prior to the start of the season, SHC wanted to help relieve some of the financial strain that some families faced during the pandemic by implementing a 20% reduction on registration fees at the beginning of the season. Our Executive and Hockey Operations Committee was committed to being able to get players on the ice in any way, shape or form that the Province and Hockey Alberta would allow. Now that the season has come to a close, the Executive, with support from our Accountants, has been working diligently over the past few weeks to reconcile our expenses for the cancelled 2020-21 season. With most of our expenses now known, we are ready to start the process of issuing credits for all registered players.

The process to determine credit amounts by level was based on the following expenses for the season:

-Ice (Practice and Game ice allocated & used by each level)

-Insurance & League Fees (Hockey Edmonton, Alberta, & Canada fees)

-Equipment (Socks & COVID related items such as Shooter Tutors)

-Team Pictures

-Software & Subscriptions (RAMP, TeamSnap, & Hockey Share)

-Coaching Certifications & Development

-Annual Financial Audit & monthly Bookkeeping fees.

-Staff Honorariums (Registrar, Ice Scheduler, & Communications).

While considering all of these factors, our goal as an Executive was to remain fair to our members while remaining fiscally responsible. Year-to-date, SHC has incurred just under $72,500 in expenses with a few outstanding invoices still forthcoming. Our anticipated total costs for the season are projected to be $80,000.

The impact of missed fundraising opportunities (ie: Casino, For the Love of the Game and Initiation Tournaments, Association-wide fundraiser, etc.) throughout the year due to COVID-19 restrictions was also a factor in looking at future season financial viability. The anticipated revenue from all fundraising efforts this season resulted in the loss of approximately $50,000 in additional income. To help offset this loss, the SHC Executive voted to add a $200 fundraising deposit to registration fees effective for the 2021-22 season which is a common practice by other Associations. Families will have the opportunity to earn their fundraising fee back by participating in an Association wide fundraiser next season.

To offset these expenses and lost fundraising revenue, the SHC Executive voted to apply $12,500 in savings from our general account towards these expenses. This amount still ensures that SHC will remain financially stable should future years present similar challenges to our operations as well as provide our members with a fair refund or credit option for fees paid during the 2020-21 season. Our financial records will be made available at our upcoming AGM should you require more details on the financial breakdown and how we determined the refund/credit amount per division that all players will receive.

To apply for a refund, please complete and submit the form below. Members have until April 15th to request a refund. After that date, all remaining credits will be applied to your RAMP registration account for next season.

2020-21 SHC Refund Form

It is also important to note that refunds and credits will not be issued until your child’s SHC equipment has been returned to SHC (socks excluded). If you have not been contacted by your team manager to return equipment, please reach out to them via email and CC our equipmentdirector@sturgeonhockeyclub.com on that message.

Please direct any feedback or concerns you have over this process by email to vicepresident@sturgeonhockeyclub.com. We will work with the sub-committee who has been involved with the refund process to address your concern in a timely manner. We appreciate all of our members’ support and understanding as our (largely) volunteer run Association has worked hard this year to try and make this season possible. We are looking forward to things hopefully returning to normal in the Fall of 2021.
