Sturgeon Hockey Club

CO-ED TIERED HOCKEY
Formed in 2011 through the amalgamation of the Morinville and Legal Minor Hockey Associations, the Mustangs serve as the Co-Ed Tiered hockey arm of the Sturgeon Hockey Club (SHC). The program is focused on advancing player skill development while fostering a culture built on excellence, teamwork, and sportsmanship.  Players benefit from structured practices and consistent league competition, all within a supportive environment that encourages growth both on and off the ice.  Players are placed on teams with players of similar skill and ability. SHC teams travel throughout the Edmonton area to play approximately 18-24 game seasons depending on the age and the tiered level of the teams. SHC is a proud member of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL) and follows the playing rules outlined by the EFHL.

In addition to this, teams have regular weekly practices. There may be additional costs associated with this stream of hockey.

U9
The U9 division at SHC is designed for players aged 7 and 8 (typically born in 2017 and 2018), building on the fundamental skills introduced at the U7 level. This stage marks an exciting step in a young player’s hockey development, focusing on improving skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting in a structured yet supportive environment.  U9 hockey introduces half-ice gameplay, allowing players to stay more engaged and get more puck touches during games. This format encourages faster decision-making, better positioning, and more opportunities to develop key skills in real-time game situations.  Players typically participate in 2 ice times per week, including practices, skill sessions, and league games as part of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL). Coaches continue to emphasize fun, teamwork, and sportsmanship while nurturing each player's individual progress.  Our U9 program aims to instill a lifelong love of hockey while preparing players for full-ice play in older divisions. Whether your child is continuing from U7 or starting fresh, U9 offers a great environment to grow in the game.

U11
The U11 division at SHC is a key stage in a young player’s hockey development, designed for athletes aged 9 and 10 (typically born in 2015 and 2016). This level marks the transition to full-ice hockey, where players begin to develop a deeper understanding of team play, positioning, and game strategies.  At U11, players build on the fundamental skills learned in earlier divisions, with increased emphasis on skating power, puck control under pressure, passing accuracy, shooting techniques, and game awareness. Coaches also introduce systems and structure to prepare players for more competitive levels of hockey in the years ahead.  Teams in the U11 division participate in the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL), competing against similarly skilled teams from the region. Players typically have 2–3 ice sessions per week, which include practices and games. Sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork remain core values of the program, while a fun, positive environment ensures players continue to enjoy the game as they grow.

U13
The U13 division at SHC is designed for players aged 11 and 12 (typically born in 2013 and 2014) and represents an important phase in both skill development and competitive play. At this level, players continue to refine their technical skills while gaining a stronger understanding of team systems, positioning, and game tactics.  U13 players compete in full-ice hockey as part of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL), facing teams from across the region. The pace and intensity of the game increase, and players are encouraged to apply critical thinking, teamwork, and discipline both on and off the ice.  With 2–3 ice sessions per week, including practices and league games, the U13 program focuses on individual improvement and team success. Coaches emphasize strong skating, puck movement, situational awareness, and physical confidence, all within a safe and supportive environment.  U13 is often a stepping stone toward higher levels of hockey, such as AA or AAA, and is ideal for players looking to take their game to the next level.

U15
The U15 division is tailored for players aged 13 and 14 (typically born in 2011 and 2012), offering a more advanced level of play as athletes further develop their skills, hockey IQ, and competitive edge. This stage bridges the gap between foundational minor hockey and more elite streams, providing a challenging environment where players can refine both individual technique and team strategies.  SHC’s U15 teams compete in the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL), with regular league games and practices that focus on high-tempo drills, special teams concepts, and physical preparedness.  Players typically have 2-3 ice times per week.  The program continues to emphasize sportsmanship, leadership, and respect, while preparing players for progression into higher levels of hockey.

U18
The U18 division is the final stage in the SHC's minor hockey pathway, designed for players aged 15 to 17 (born in 2008 to 2010). This division provides a competitive, fast-paced environment where players can fine-tune their skills, develop leadership qualities, and prepare for potential advancement to higher levels of hockey.  U18 teams play in the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL), where the level of play is elevated, and expectations are higher. Players are exposed to advanced systems, increased physical play, and a greater focus on game preparation and discipline. Teams typically have 2-3 ice times per week, including structured practices and games.  As senior members of the club, U18 players are encouraged to lead by example—mentoring younger athletes and representing the values of the Sturgeon Hockey Club both on and off the ice.
