SU701 Tribute to Master Corporal Byron Greff

Feb. 08, 2023

On Feb 5, 2023, SU701 played a game vs St. Albert at the Edmonton Garrison.

It was brought to the coaches attention by Team Captain Garrett Buhler, that a member of our team had a father who played for the Garrison team, and tragically lost his life while serving our country. With the help of several members of the Canadian Forces stationed at the Garrison, we were able to locate 2 of his game worn jerseys that we presented to Kellar Greff and his mother Lindsay.

Below are the words of assistant coach Gavin Bancarz who presented a short speech to Kellar and Lindsay, and the many fans who attended including several military members who served with MCpl Byron Greff. It was a touching moment for all, including the family, and on behalf of SU701, our thoughts are with the Greff family as well all those who sacrificed their lives for our country and those who continue to serve.

"Good afternoon everyone.  Thank you all for coming today to support our players in the game they love, and the game we love watching them play. Before the game we would like to take a few moments to remember someone that sadly is no longer here to share in that experience. Master Corporal Byron Greff was a member of the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia Light Infantry.  In 2011 he was in a military convoy when an attack occurred in the Afghan capital of Kabul.  MCpl Greff along with 16 others lost their lives as a result of the attack. We would like to now have a moment of silence in recognition of MCpl Greff’s sacrifice as he strived to serve his country and his family. Thank you."

"MCpl Greff loved the game of hockey, and that love is shared and honoured by his son Kellar Greff, playing in his last year as a U18 Sturgeon Mustang, having starting this journey playing mini sticks in this very rink.  At this time we would like to invite Kellar and the St. Albert captain to participate in a ceremonial puck drop, which shall be conducted by Kellar’s Mother Ms. Lindsay Greff. Thank you.  On behalf of the Edmonton Garrison, and all those present, Garrett Buhler, captain of the Sturgeon Mustangs would now like to present Kellar with the actual Jersey (stains, puck marks and all) worn by MCpl Greff, when he played for the 3 VP hockey team here at the Garrison.  We also have a second jersey worn by MC Greff, that will be hung at the Mustangs bench for the duration of the game. And finally before the game, we ask that everyone please rise and remove your hats for the playing of the Canadian National Anthem. Thank you again to everyone here, and best of luck to both teams today."
